For most small businesses, an outsourced marketing team is the better starting point. It costs less than a full-time hire, gives you several skills at once, and starts faster. In-house wins once you need daily, embedded marketing capacity that one person can fill and manage well.

1. Is outsourced marketing cheaper than hiring in-house?

Usually, yes, for the same breadth of work. The cost of a hire is higher than the salary.

Take a UK marketing manager on the average 2026 marketing salary of about £44,000 (Whito, Marketing Salaries UK 2026). On top of that:

  • Employer National Insurance is 15% of earnings above £5,000 a year, which is £5,850 on this salary.
  • Minimum employer pension is 3% of qualifying earnings between £6,240 and £50,270, about £1,133.
  • That takes the statutory cost to roughly £51,000 before holiday cover, equipment, software, training and recruitment.

Whito estimates the true cost of a hire at 25% to 30% above salary once overheads are included, which is about £55,000 to £57,000 here. Recruitment agencies commonly charge 20% to 30% of first-year salary on top.

An outsourced team is a monthly retainer. Published 2026 UK figures put a single-channel retainer at £1,250 to £3,500 a month, which is £15,000 to £42,000 a year. We break down those figures in how much a marketing agency costs in the UK.

The comparison is not exact. A retainer at the top of that range covers more than one channel, and a salary buys you someone’s full working week. But for a small business, the gap is real.

3. When is an outsourced marketing team the better choice?

Outsourcing tends to win when:

  • You need more than one skill, such as strategy, SEO, content, social media and a website.
  • Marketing is important but not a full-time job yet.
  • You want to start quickly and test what works before committing to a salary.
  • One person leaving would leave you with nothing.

4. Should I hire a marketing manager or outsource my marketing?

Hire when marketing is a daily, full-time job and you can manage it. That usually means you have a clear plan, enough budget to support a hire with tools and spend, and someone senior enough to give direction. A junior hire without direction often costs more than it returns.

Outsource when you need strategy and delivery together and cannot yet justify a salary.

There is also a middle route. Many businesses outsource the strategy and specialist work, then hire one in-house person to run it day to day. That person gets a plan and specialist support behind them.

5. What does an outsourced, in-house marketing team look like at Wildfire?

Wildfire Marketing is an outsourced marketing team for businesses in West Sussex and Hampshire. Based in Bracklesham, we act as an extension of your team, covering strategy, SEO, content, web design and AI search visibility, so you get the skills of an in-house department without the overhead.

In practice that means we take the time to understand your goals, your audience and what makes your business different, then build one plan across the full marketing journey. Our services can be delivered individually, but they work best as an integrated strategy on retainer, which is how our Wildfire Growth System is built. Strategy comes from our marketing consultancy, and delivery runs through channels like SEO. You can see how this has worked for other businesses on our work page.

If you are weighing up a hire, we will tell you honestly if in-house is the better fit.

6. What are the risks of outsourcing marketing?

  • Distance. An outside team does not hear what is said in the office. Good teams fix this with regular reviews and access to your people.
  • Vague scope. A loose brief gives loose results. Agree deliverables in writing.
  • Lock-in. Check notice terms and make sure you keep ownership of your accounts, site and data.
  • Fit. A team that does not understand your sector will slow you down. Ask for relevant work and named people.

7. Which should you choose?

Ask three questions:

  1. Do we need several skills, or one?
  2. Can we keep one person busy and supported full time?
  3. Do we have a plan to give them?

If you answer several skills, no, and no, start with an outsourced team. If you answer one skill, yes, and yes, hire. Not sure which you are? Talk to us and we will help you work it out.

If you want a price for your own situation, talk to us.
